Outsmarting Logan Roy: Lessons in Succession Planning
“Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.” Boomers are approaching the end of their careers, but are struggling to envision what comes next. Gen Xers are next in line, but are they ready? Millennials are eager but challenged by the big picture. Emotions, insecurities, economics and jealousies are only some of the barriers to true long-range planning. Join us for a lively discussion of how to develop a succession plan that adapts to your firm’s versions of Succession’s Roy family – Logan, Kendall, Shiv and Roman. Perhaps more questions than answers, but the framework of what may well work for your firm!

Easy Pickings: Don’t Miss the Ripe Fruit in Your Marketing
Marketing your law firm and your practice areas doesn’t have to be a chore. In fact, you might be missing easy opportunities. Economists tell us that it’s more cost effective to keep an existing client than acquire new ones. Similarly, it’s easier to expand the scope of work you’re doing with existing clients than to pitch your services to new clients. This session will give you tips and discuss ways to reach the ripe fruit you may be overlooking.

This round table forum will discuss strategies for teaching associates, from the less experienced to the seasoned, the “art” of billing and how to effectively capture the time they spend working on files.

Law Firm Management – Lessons Learned and Questions Raised
This will be an interactive session led by a veteran law firm manager with thoughts on lessons learned – good and bad, and a newly-appointed law firm manager with new ideas and fair number of questions as she begins her new adventure. The moderators will share their thoughts on a variety of topics, pose questions and quandaries to the audience for feedback and invite the shared wisdom of the group on issues that many law firm leaders face.

Combatting Social Inflation and Its Effects on Both Litigation and Law Firm Finances
How many non-billable hours have we all spent griping about the billable hour lifestyle and billing guidelines? In this session, we will examine the economic model and, specifically, how it can contribute to the dramatic increase in settlement values and jury verdicts. To push back against the rising settlement demands, we need to engage our clients and create a more cohesive team amongst the defense stakeholders. We will encourage audience participation, in confidence, as we discuss strategies for engaging our clients in this discussion and encouraging much-needed change in the insurer-outside counsel relationship.
