James J. Alfini
South Texas College of Law

James J. Alfini is Professor of Law and Dean Emeritus at the South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas. His scholarship focuses on judicial ethics. He is the co-author of Judicial Conduct and Ethics, 4th ed. 2007, and served on the American Bar Association Joint Commission to Evaluate the Model Code of Judicial Conduct. Before coming to South Texas College, Professor Alfini taught courses in constitutional law, mediation, and ethics at Northern Illinois University.


Jason W. Anderson
Carney Badley Spellman PS

Jason W. Anderson is an attorney with Carney, Badley Spellman, P.S., in Seattle, focusing on appellate advocacy and civil litigation. He has handled appeals raising a range of substantive legal issues in all levels of Washington's appellate courts and in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Before going into private practice, Jason served as a judicial clerk at the Washington State Court of Appeals.


The Honorable Beth M. Andrus
Washington Court of Appeals

The Honorable Beth M. Andrus was appointed by Governor Jay Inslee to the Court of Appeals in June 2018 after serving 8 years as a trial judge with King County Superior Court. Before taking the bench, Judge Andrus had over 20 years in private practice with the law firms of Schweppe Krug & Tausend, Miller Nash, and Skellenger Bender. Her practice ranged from employment law, intellectual property, commercial litigation, construction law, and appellate advocacy. She started her legal career as a law clerk to the Honorable Gerald Heaney of the U.S. Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. At King County Superior Court, Judge Andrus presided over civil, criminal, psychiatric civil commitment, family law, and dependency cases. She was a member of that court's Executive Committee, served as Assistant Presiding Judge, and managed the civil department as Chief Civil Judge. In 2016, the King County Chapter of Washington Women Lawyers honored Judge Andrus with their Judge of the Year Award. Seattle University Law School and the Women's Law Caucus named her their 2017 Woman of the Year. Later that same year, Judge Andrus received King County Bar Association's Outstanding Judge of the Year Award.


Lisa M. Baird

Lisa M. Baird, counsel with Reed Smith, is a member of the Life Sciences Health Industry Group, practicing in the area of product liability litigation. Lisa has extensive experience defending corporate clients in both trial and appellate courts. She has experience in the full range of issues that regularly recur in product liability litigation (including preemption, statute of limitations, the learned intermediary doctrine, Daubert issues, and general and specific causation), as well as other types of complex litigation (class issues, unfair competition, consumer fraud claims, and punitive damages). Lisa is the editor of Reed Smith's Life Sciences Legal Update, the firm's weblog covering trends and developments in life sciences and health care law. In addition, Lisa regularly represents pro bono clients in humanitarian parole and asylum cases. Lisa is the Vice Chair of the DRI Appellate Advocacy Committee.


Megan E. Boyd
Georgia State University College of Law

Megan E. Boyd is a Lecturer at Georgia State University College of Law, where she teaches civil procedure, advanced legal writing, and professional responsibility. Before she left practice for academia, Boyd worked at an Atlanta law firm, where she was co-chairperson of the firm's appellate practice group. She is the author of numerous articles on legal writing and co-author of Show, Don't Tell: Legal Writing for the Real World. She maintains a legal writing blog, www.ladylegalwriter.blogspot.com.


Kirsten M. Castañeda
Alexander Dubose & Jefferson

Kirsten M. Castañeda has been litigating complex cases and appeals in federal and state trial and appellate courts throughout the country for twenty years. In 2018 alone, she has joined trial lawyers in litigating five jury trials in Texas district courts. As an active participant in the trials, Kirsten argued motions challenging experts and seeking to exclude evidence; assisted in preserving error with regard to expert testimony, lay witnesses, and documentary evidence; drafted and argued trial briefs on critical legal issues; presented grounds for directed verdict; handled the informal and informal jury charge conferences; and assisted in crafting and implementing trial strategy. Three of these trials resulted in complete defense verdicts for ADJT's clients in a venue historically unfavourable to defendants. In addition to her trial-court appellate work, Kirsten has argued cases of first impression in the Fifth Circuit and the Texas Supreme Court, and has defended clients in federal and state class action, mass action, and MDL litigation. Her class action experience led her to co-author a new chapter on standing for A Practitioner's Guide to Class Actions, Second Edition (ABA Book Publishing 2017), exploring developments after Spokeo, Inc. v. Robins, 136 S. Ct. 1540 (2016). And Kirsten's frequent representation of clients in the oil and gas, banking/consumer finance, and aviation industries has provided valuable experience with federal preemption issues and the interplay between statutory, regulatory, and common law requirements. Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Civil Appellate Law, Kirsten has been recognized in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business in Appellate Litigation for Texas and is listed in Texas Super Lawyers and was recognised as a Top 100 Dallas/Fort Worth Super Lawyers in 2016. She is an active member of the American Bar Association's Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section and Council of Appellate Lawyers.


Gregory A. Castanias
Jones Day

Gregory A. Castaniashead of Jones Day's Federal Circuit team, has almost 30 years' experience as a leading appellate and intellectual property litigator. His experience includes five Supreme Court arguments, 70+ Federal Circuit arguments, and countless others in federal and state courts across the nation, from Alaska to Connecticut. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers. His intellectual property experience includes such diverse technologies as genetics, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, chemistry, electronics, and mechanical fields, as well as copyright, trademark, and trade secret disputes. Greg also has significant experience in state tax disputes before the U.S. Supreme Court and state appellate courts. Greg is the lead author of Federal Appellate Practice and Procedure (West Publishing 2d ed. 2017) and is an adjunct professor of law at Indiana University's Maurer School of Law, where he teaches Appellate Practice and Procedure and Federal Circuit Advocacy.


The Honorable Elizabeth T. Clement

Michigan Supreme Court

The Honorable Elizabeth T. Clement joined the Michigan Supreme Court on November 17, 2017. Before her appointment, she served as chief legal counsel for the Michigan Governor, advising him on a wide variety of legal, legislative, and policy matters. She previously held the positions of cabinet secretary and deputy chief of staff, as well as deputy legal counsel in the Governor's Office. Justice Clement served as legal counsel for Senate Majority Leader Michael Bishop in 2010 where she provided legal research, analysis, and advice on legislation and management of the office. In addition, she was responsible for the State Senate advice and consent process including providing reports and recommendations on appointees. Justice Clement owned and operated Clement Law, PLLC, from 2002 to 2006, where she represented individuals and businesses primarily in the areas of family law, adoption, probate, estate planning, and criminal law.


Mark Cooney
Western Michigan University Cooley School of Law

Mark Cooney is a professor at the Western Michigan University Cooley School of Law, teaching courses in legal research, writing, and advanced writing. Before joining the Cooley faculty, Mark spent 10 years in private practice, specializing in civil appeals and arguing before the Michigan Supreme Court, Michigan Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Mark is the editor in chief of The Scribes Journal of Legal Writing, and he frequently speaks and publishes on legal writing and appellate practice. He is also the former chair the State Bar of Michigan's Appellate Practice Section and a founding member of the Michigan Supreme Court Historical Society's Advocates Guild.


Lawrence S. Ebner

Lawrence S. Ebner is an accomplished and steadfast advocate for business and industry in federal and state appellate courts throughout the United States. Companies of all sizes, national trade associations, and professional organizations call upon Larry when they need an experienced and articulate voice in the U.S. Supreme Court, federal courts of appeals, and state appellate courts. After more than 40 years as a Washington, D.C.-based appellate litigator and practice leader at a major law firm, Larry launched his own, nationwide, appellate litigation boutique, Capital Appellate Advocacy PLLC. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School and a Fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers. Larry serves DRI as Immediate Past Chair of the Amicus Committee and Publications Chair of the Appellate Advocacy Committee.


The Honorable Harris L. Hartz
US Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit

The Honorable Harris L. Hartz has been a member of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals since December 2001. From 1989 to 1999 he was a judge on the New Mexico Court of Appeals, serving as chief judge from 1997 to 1999. From 2002?09 Judge Hartz was a member of the Judicial Conference?s Standing Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure. He served as Chair of the Appellate Judges Conference of the ABA in 2004?05. He has been active in the American Law Institute since 1993 and is an Adviser to the Principles of Government Ethics project. Judge Hartz is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School, where he was Case and Developments Editor of the Harvard Law Review. He received his AB degree from Harvard College summa cum laude in physics. In 2013 Judge Hartz was appointed by Chief Justice Roberts to the Federal-State Jurisdiction Committee of the United States Judicial Conference. He was recently a member of the Board of Overseers of the Searle Civil Justice Institute and is on the Deans Advisory Committee at the University of California, Irvine School of Law.


Adam W. Hofmann

Adam W. Hofmann is a partner with Hanson Bridgett LLP and is the assistant leader of the firm's appellate practice. Adam has argued cases in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and in every Court of Appeal in California. He has also filed merits briefs on behalf of amici curiae in the U.S. and California Supreme Courts, and he received the International Municipal Lawyers' Association's Amicus Advocacy Award for 2018. Outside of work, Adam teaches courses in land-use and local-government law at the University of San Francisco School of Law and coaches moot-court teams at the U.C. Davis School of Law. Adam is the Program Vice Chair of the 2019 Appellate Advocacy Seminar.

Matthew T. Nelson

Matthew T. Nelson chairs Warner Norcross & Judd's Appellate Practice Group. Mr. Nelson has successfully argued before the United States Supreme Court, and has represented businesses, governments, and individuals in appeals throughout the country. During the 2016 Term of the U.S. Supreme Court, Mr. Nelson represented clients in two cases on the merits addressing such diverse topics as copyrighting the design of cheerleading uniforms and constitutionally deficient immigration advice. Mr. Nelson serves as Vice-chair of DRI's Amicus Committee and Membership Co-Chair of the DRI Appellate Advocacy Committee. The Honorable Eliot D. Prescott was appointed to the Connecticut Court of Appeals in 2014. Judge Prescott started his legal career in the Washington, D.C. office of the law firm Fulbright & Jaworski, LLP, before he returned to Connecticut to serve as an Assistant Attorney General, and later as the Department Head of the Special Litigation Department. in the Office of the Attorney General. During his tenure as an Assistant Attorney General, Judge Prescott represented the State of Connecticut in complex litigation matters in state and federal court, and argued more than twenty-five appeals in the Connecticut Supreme Court, Appellate Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Judge Prescott then served for nearly 10 years as a trial judge for the Superior Court of Connecticut, presiding over criminal trials and civil matters in various locations around the State. He also served as the Presiding Judge of the Administrative Appeals and Tax Session of the Superior Court. In addition, Judge Prescott has served as a member of the Rules Committee of the Superior Court and the Advisory Committee on the Appellate Rules.

Jeffrey J.Rachlinski, PhD, JD

Jeffrey J.Rachlinski, PhD, JD is an innovator in both administrative law, and in social psychology and the law. Since joining the Cornell Law School faculty in 1994, less than a year after receiving a Ph.D. in Psychology and a J.D. from Stanford University, Professor Rachlinski has offered new perspectives on the influence of human psychology on decision-making by courts, administrative agencies, and regulated communities. Professor Rachlinski's unique analytical viewpoint has led him to explore varied topics in legal practice, such as litigation strategies, punitive damages, administrative law, environmental law, and products liability. One of the most versatile scholars at Cornell Law School, Professor Rachlinski has taught social and cognitive psychology for lawyers, administrative law, environmental law, civil procedure and torts. Prof. Rachlinski received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in Psychology from The Johns Hopkins University. He received his law degree and his Ph.D. in Psychology from Stanford University.

He is a co-leader of the firm's Appellate Practice group. Fred has been recognized by his peers and top publications for his appellate work. The Honorable Loretta H. Rush

Supreme Court of Indiana

The Honorable Loretta H. RushChief Justice took the oath of office as Indiana's 108th Supreme Court Justice in November 2012 after being appointed by Governor Mitch Daniels. The Judicial Nominating Commission named her Chief Justice in August 2014. Chief Justice Rush serves on the Conference of Chief Justices Board of Directors (2nd term) and is co-chair of the National Judicial Opioid Task Force. In addition to being a member of local, state, and national bar associations, Chief Justice Rush is a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. She is an Academy of Law Alumni Fellow for the Maurer School of Law. She chairs or is a member of several commissions (including the Commission on Improving the Status of Children in Indiana and the Judicial Nominating/Qualifications Commission). Prior to her appointment, Rush spent 15 years at a Lafayette law firm and was elected three times to serve as Tippecanoe Superior Court 3 judge. She was born in Pennsylvania and moved frequently as a child before settling in Indiana in 1972. She earned her undergraduate degree from Purdue University and her law degree from Indiana University Maurer School of Law, both with honors.

Sarah Elizabeth Spencer is a shareholder at Christensen & Jensen in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is an experienced appellate advocate who has handled a variety of appeals in state and federal court. Ms. Spencer also defends high-stakes lawsuits involving commercial disputes, business torts, and product liability claims. She has been active in DRI since 2008. Ms. Spencer currently serves as the Program Chair for the 2019 Appellate Advocacy Seminar and previously served on the DRI Young Lawyers Committee's steering committee.

Robert L. Wisewith Bowman and Brooke LLP is is the Chair of the DRI Appellate Advocacy Committee. Mr. Wise focuses his practice on class and mass actions, appeals and advanced motions, product liability defense, and complex commercial litigation. As a founding member of the firm's Appellate and Advanced Motions Practice, Rob is integrally involved in several high-profile putative class and mass actions, including ongoing alleged football-concussion-injury litigation, as well as several putative nationwide putative class actions in the automotive, consumer product, and medical device industries. Mr. Wise has also handled appeals before all levels of appellate courts in Virginia in both civil and administrative proceedings and has been involved in appeals throughout the country as lead appellate counsel, on-brief author, and off-brief legal-strategy consultant. Mr.Wise is active in several legal and professional organizations, including DRI and its Class Actions and Appellate Advocacy Committees (of which he is the committee Chair), as well as the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys (for which he served on the board for several years).
